sliding glass doors

Hey.. quick question..
My company just purchased a lot that was previsouly owned by a
construction company.

the company went bankrupt and left alot of material in the buildings.

There is alot of sliding glass doors.. they look extremely heavy duty.. these buidler built very very high end homes (probably why they went out of buisness)

Do you think that these sliding glass doors could be used for an aquarium build.

Instead of letting them just be junked and broken is it worth keeping them?

If they are tempered (I have no way to know)
Could I get away with using them for front bottom and back and trying to get some other glass for sides?

I've never thought much about building my own tank... but the glass would be free.... what do you guys think?

If they are tempered then you wouldn't be able to cut them down to an appropriate size.

Sliding glass doors are typically made of somewhat thin glass so I doubt that you could make an aquarium out of the glass unless it was cut down to an appropriate size.

I'm betting they are tempered for safety, and thus can not be cut..
You'd have to build a huge! tank from these..

They are Tempered. Plus they are probably only 1/4 glass. So since you can't cut them down they are useless for Aquariums. Oh well

ONLY 1/4"?? That's thick for aquariums! 55s at least.

Non tempered sliding glass doors?

Boy, that sure would make for a memorable turkey day when aunt Nana gets her holiday groove on and walks head first into the closed door

"Say... did someome spill cranberry sauce on the floor or is that...."

I've seen one get shattered when I was a kid. My brother accidently shot one with a blow gun ... it hit the very corner. It started to slightly spider web, then it got worse. All of a sudden the inner pane came crashing down in a million tiny pieces.

Kids can be stupid at times

As a child, I watched first hand as the babby sitter walked through a non-tempered sliding glass door.

Why did she do that? We were playing hide and seek, it was dusk and I closed the door and hid behind the grill on the porch.

She did get cut... The door was from the 70's. Newer doors (as others have mentioned) are likely tempered.

it is 100% impossible to cut tempered glass. If you cut it, it was not tempered

Sure you can cut Tempered glass. One little cut and you have a million little peices of glass. Little tough if you want a peace much larger then a dime though:P

I wouldn't say 100%. I bet it could be cut with a lightsaber, or possibly the fires of mount doom.

Tempered glass cannot be cut...period, end of discussion! If these are older doors, then they may not be safety glass. However, building codes now ( and for a long time) require that all doors, adjacent panes and windows less than 18" off the floor be tempered or laminated glass. Best way to check if it's tempered is to try and score the glass with a glass cutter. It will be really hard to do so with tempered glass.

Honestly, even if it's not tempered, why would you want to use old, scratched up glass anyways, since you'd be going through all the effort? Glass is pretty cheap to buy

Rest assured it is 100%

Though the fire of mount doom would remove the temper from the glass if it cooled properly and then it would be anealed and you could cut it!
