Who uses Denitrators?

Anybody out there use a Denitrator and if so what make? Would a Denitrator be detrimental to a refugium? Thanks Jeff

I've used a nitrate sponge...just the kent nitrate sponge stuff. Just threw a bag of it in my sump and in a few weeks my nitrates dropped to 0, (didnt do any water changes, and still havent lol). My nitrates are still at 0 too and i use tap water, plus never do water changes...so i'm convinced that it really is helping lol.

I have the smaller Midwest Sulfur Denitrator on a 180. I suppose it could impact macro algea that likes nitrates in a refugium. I have mostly soft corals with two monti cap hard corals in that tank and they are doing great. I have seen no negative impact from the denitrator at all - only positives.

I have a remote deep sand bed (RDSB) in a container in my
sump. The whole thing cost less than $10 to set up. While
they take a few months to get going, people have reported
good luck with them.

Mine is only a month old, so I can't report on how effective it
is.

i have the aquaipure denitrator. my nitrates were 80 (or higher) and they are now at 40, so i there was a difference before i stirred everything up chasing some fish around, which caused a minicycle, but when thats over, i think ill see even more of a difference. they do take a while to get going, but what doesnt in this hobby?

I use the Midwest Aquatic denitrator and it works great. My nitrates used to be over 40 and are now 0. It only takes a couple weeks to see the results.

I have an Aquaripure denitrator.

I first had my display set up with a shallow send bed. I've since configured it as BB and in both situations my nitrates remained at 0.

I just added a Korallin BioDenitrator S-4002 to my tank this past weekend. Too early to tell you if I like it but it does seem to be lowering my nitrates already.

I just tested my nitrates this evening and found that they dropped from a high of 20-25 to 7 ppm in only 10 days. I am happy to report the Korallin BioDenitrator is doing a great job.

I use the Midwest brand and it dropped my nitrates from 20 to 0 in my reef and from 60 to 0 in my FOWLR in a little over a month.

We use DIY denitrators at work on some systems, and Ive helped a few customers build the same style ones. They work really well IME.

All I did was take a 3 canister RO unit, hook up a small MaxiJet with flow valve on one end, run a line to the first can with sulfur media, the second can with crushed coral (to bring the pH back up a bit), and the third can with carbon (to help pull out any Hydrogen Sulfide). Test the effluent after a couple weeks- if the nitrates are high, reduce the flow with the restrictor valve, if theyre low- it working! Leave it alone! Its worked well for me anyhow.

Mine is just two tightly packed filter compartments with real slow flow going up one and down the other. It works without any media but it took it about 6 months to really kick in.

The only pain is keeping the flow steady.

I win! I installed a Korallin 1502 denitrator 7 weeks ago my nitrates were 100 ppm and killing things, 6 weeks later my nitrates are and have been zero since. I'm an overloader so I think it's worth the money.
