You've been running a remora pro in your sump for 3yrs? Unbelievable! That is truly awesome! I wish more people had luck with them. Be very thankful if you have had a successful reef using that skimmer as 95% of the remora users don't get any skimmate.

Okay I guess maybe 0.5%-1% of peoples deltec HOB skimmers are able to overflow. Ill mark that as 0.5%-1% of deltec HOB skimmers are defected

I have been running a remora hob (not pro) for 3+ yrs with good results. The hob threads are filled with hearsay and brand loyalty more than anything. I can search threads and find everyone of the recommended skimmer here bashed in some context or another and see even more recommended that will be bashed once they are widely adopted.
No matter what your choice in equipment is your real success is going to be based on husbandry. If you keep up with water changes you can run carbon and have a successful tank. When it comes down to it the few cups of skimmate that are pulled from the water column using a more expensive skimmer vs. the two cups of skimmate with the bashed skimmers doesn't really mean anything if you are pulling out gallons of water every week (or other week). |

If you look up some of the older hob threads I've provided solid proof that the remora can skim. For some reason every time that I post my pics I dont get a response from the folks who are anti - remora and pro whatever skimmer is the next best thing that is untested.

3x post from rc downtime. Still believing in frequent water changes vs any above mentioned skimmer.

I will add that for the price of the "better" hob's you can get an overflow, a 10g tank, and an in sump skimmer.

Flint&Eric,
I just purchaced a MCE600 from a fellow reefer here at RC. It has skimmed more breaking in for the last few days than my remora pro with the mag 3 and surface box would in two weeks. Plus the skimmate darkness isnt even comparable. However the MCE600 is much louder than i thought it would be. It seems to have a resonance to it. I have reseated the pump 20 times or more , and have even tried reseating it while it is running to try and get it quieter. It just has an annoying loud hum. I have the new red bushing's from doug and the rubber strips on the bottom and one side. i have tried no rubber strips , and some on the bottom and sides and on just the bottom. however the "least" amount of hum comes from the stips on one side and on the bottom. Any advise ? I love the skimmer, yes it overflowed the cup because i had it down too far when breaking in , however it all drained back into the skimmer as designed. yes it is a small cup but i take mine off and clean the sludge from it every other day so no problem. It might be in the cups design that it pulls darker skimmate than other hangons with a round cup such as the octo or rouge. I was trying to decide between them but went with used deltec MCE600 instead. I coundt be happier excet if i could only quiet it down !!!!!! |

dont know what to say, ours is extremely quiet and has been from the start. lucky i guess? i'd give it a week or two and then try a nice vinegar soak and scrub on the pump.

Like the overflow issue, not everyone has the same exp. Some complain of noise and also microbubbles. The one I worked with was very quiet, and didn't have microbubble issues.

Mine makes a slight hum. Nothing that keeps me from sleeping and the tank is a couple feet from my bed.
make sure the pump isnt leaning against either sides of the skimmer wall. Also, I added 2 small suction cups on the bottom of the aquabee pump. I run air valve open at 12 o' clock and have the cup about 1/2"-1" from the bottom and I get foam like skimmate. Heres a pic of it running on my 3 week old setup with no live stock. As you can see there isnt much to skim out but its trying ![]() ![]()

Ever thought about wrapping one small piece of bubble wrap around it? That always kills the noise for me.

the small bubble kind right ... anything better than buble wrap or is it the best...? |

Thats the only thing i've really used that works and is super small diameter wise. Don't wrap the back or the top, just the two sides and bottom. Basically a U

Deltec all the way. Don't waist your money on the remora, it's loud and not that efficient. (i've had both)
