I am very impressed with the ps75. When i got it on my 24 gal, I was dissapointed (this is 24 hours of skimmate)
 now, one week later on the same system, this thing turned in to a monster (this is 12 hours of skimmate)

if you dial it in just right you should get a cup every 1-2 days or so depending on what type of skimate you want of course....wetter or dryer

Ok, I have the PS 75 and broke the impeller shaft on the stock pump when doing the mesh mod. So I bought a Gen X 1000 and cannot get the fittings of the U-Tube for the HOB configuration to match up with the output of the pump. I bought a 1/2 inch male nipple fitting to insert into the output of the pump, but the fitting for the U-tube does not screw down tight on the fitting. any suggestions?

What about using some rubber hose to connect the two. WHen you put it on the pipe of the utube hot you'll have to make sure its very warm. So get some 1/2" id tubing and heat it in the microwave until its pretty flimbsy, then put it on the tube, then on your pump, should work just fine. When it cools it'll shrink and be very solid.

Last night, I decided to pull out the restrictor on the outlet of the PS160. This seemed to allow the skimmer to skim more consistently and is doing a good job. One problem however is that its making a lil more noise than before.

It's been a while since I posted/read this thread. I need a skimmer for a 400g reef tank. You guys have had great success in make the cheaper affordable skimmers out perform the pricey name brands. Can you please suggest a skimmer for my needs?

Why would you want a asm skimmer? Get an octo instead for half the price.
igotsalt, these skimmers aren't going to handle 400g's. Not even 4 of them. I'm guessing it would take 6-8ps160's fully modded to skim a 400g but i would suggest it.

I was hoping you guys had some experience with larger tanks. I have a Kent M Nautilus turbo eductor skimmer that has been laying around due to a broken part. I finally found someone to ship it to me!! 9 months looking for intake tube/part!
Are there any mods to maximize it's ability? Just purchased a red sea "turbo skimmer pump" to run it. I will use this skimmer until I find a better skimmer. I have no experience with the larger skimmers. There are many different opinions on what is best. They all are pricey. People seem to get attached to the name instead of performance. It is wonderful you guys take the time to test and modify equipment. By tweking the performance you create good affordable equipment for all of us! I've gotten suggestions on Deltec, ASM, Pacific Coast and more. I probably need to start weeding out by customer service, life expectancy/durability, how hard to clean it etc. Thanks for your comments! Keep up the good work! |

Unfortunately a 400g tank is going to be an expensive one to skim, but if you can afford a 400g tank you should be able to afford the skimmer ; ) Its going to take 600-1000 bux imo.

There is an old thread on here about the jebo 520 skimmers. Search and read it, there is now 2008 versions of this skimmer on ebay. One member did alot of testing with it modified, and they seem to like it. Just something to think about.

Yep, originally in the first page of this thread there was somone on board to test the 520 as i was very excited to see what it had. The body is worth 80 bux without the pump. Its 24" and 6" diameter and has a turbulent killer it it you could turn into a bubble plate very easy. You could turn it into a recirc or a nw skimmer easy as well. Its built well and could probably handle a 75g tank fairly well.....basically its an octo 150 for half the price.

Kind of jumping off topic a bit... I know Luke has mentioned that the acrylic or plastic on the PS160 is "weak" or brttle, but has anyone really tried to drill it or modified it for recirculation?

In the beginning someone did.....and cracked there skimmer! lol, then they got another and did it again and it worked. IMO, its not a good idea as its extruded acrylic and will crack very easy. The only way i could see it being done is if you were to melt through it.
