I haven't made it to a hardware store so if you can figure something out, that would be great.
Your pics are good but I still think I need one in my hand before I try to make it. So many unanswered questions!

Just use any kind of pill jar, even a water bottle will work.....as long as no one see's it! lol Here's a pic for you. Attach your hose, drill another hole on the other end and put a piece of tubing in it. You can stuff it with a paper towel or cotton or filter floss.

It does look like the changed the cup adapter again. The one you have resembles the older style that I saw that wasn't zero-clearance. I haven't seen the new ones until you pointed that out. Looking at the return of the skimmer, it still resembles the others that a gate valve mod assisted, but again, they could have modified that too without me knowing.

Anyhow. I have had rather good luck with my skimmer so far. It works really well and I wish you luck with yours!

This is the newest design. Its called a "euro-lock". You turn the large nut, and the cup slides right out with zero clearance.

This is the old "bayonet" design. It requires about 1/2" to remove.

The oldest design uses a very large union fitting. Also zero clearance.

Also, the newer models come with a wedge pipe for adjustments. Much better than a gatevalve.

You rotate the pipe to open and close the path that water exits.

Ahh.. cool. They did do some upgrades over the past several months to their skimmers.

Thanks for the info!

thanks luke33, that looks simple enough. I'm surprised something so simple works so well. What's the benefit of the filter floss inside? Added sound insulation?

Here it is after just under 24 hours in operation. Not bad I think.

I turned the stand pipe a quarter inch towards closed when I got home a 1/2 hour ago to see if I notice any difference.

The bubbles are still large but definitely getting smaller. Weird thing is the bubbles break up where the body curves into the neck and then get denser right where the union connects the cup to the skimmer body.

I'm having a problem with the water rushing out of the drain. What is everyone doing to stop the water fall effect. This is especially bad if I start to adjust the pipe more towards closed. This makes the water rush out of the drain.

I now have the 90 elbow at a 45 degree angle but this doesn't seem to help. The directions state that the drain shouldn't be under the water line and if I turn the 90 elbow straigt down, it will be under the water line? Really, the only choice seems to be no elbow and have the water rushing right out of the drain or put the elbow on the drain and point it at an angle. Either way is loud.

how about cutting down the elbow a little so it sits just above the water when turned down?

I really don't think that would change a thing Jose. At least with the 90 at an angle, the water slides not pours into the sump. There has to be something that I'm not looking at, an easy fix.

I have my exhaust terminate right before it hits the water. It is angled at 45 degrees. You can see it on the right side of the picture.

Your water doesn't seem to be pouring like mine does Jim. Mine is coming out in a steady steam, pretty powerful and the skimmer is turned just a tad from open! I tried to close it more tonight just to see what would happen and it pours out of the 90.

Besides the growing pains that are normal with a new piece of equipment, this thing is really crushing it and not even a day 1/2 in use!

Got a question for you ER owners. My little guy's would take about an hour to start skimming after feeding, this new 180 takes hours. Is that normal? Flake, mixed food, doesn't matter, it shuts it down for hours. I'm wondering if this is part of the break in or if this is what I should get used too.
Problem is I feed the tank a lot in small increments. I have 6 anthias that like a treat throughout the day and tangs that get hungry. If I feed like I do, the skimmer is never working!

anyone? Is this just the new skimmer breaking in or is it common with larger skimmer to take a long time to get back to skimming after feeding, hands in the tank, etc?

Hmm. That is a tough one. High air draw skimmers are more sensitive to foods and such than lower air draw models IME. I think it will get better once you have a good coat built up in the body.

The water rushing out of this skimmer is ridiculous!! There has to be something people are doing to stop the water fall in the sump. A quick fix like. . "do this and you won't hear that ever again!"

The skimmer is working great but there are definitely problems. Noise problems from the pump and the damn water rushing out of the drain pipe.

I can't believe everyone is dealing with this, there has to be a fix.

Yeah, I'll get that info to you tomorow. Sorry about that.

You can pick up the frags whenever, are we heading to DLC? Let's do it tomorrow night, I have to head over to Puffers place and pick up some salt and drop off a zoa frag, that's in the same direction as DLC, right?
