Beckett vs. needle wheel vs. down draft

I am in the planning stages of a major tank upgrade in the next 6-8 months. I have decided to make my skimmer the first purchase because it can be used right away on my current tank.
The new tank will be a 300 gal heavy stocked mixed reef.
I have started my research and want to begin by deciding on a "style" of skimmer based on the pros and cons of each. I know there is more than one way to skin a cat but any comments based on ACTUAL EXPERIENCE will be greatly appreciated.

there are many threads like this with as many varied responses. I think there are several skimmers of different type that do equally well. I have a dual Beckett Barr 5220 run on a Pan World 250 and really like it.

a good becket will get the job done. I like them because they dont take up so much space and they are pretty much hassle free

there seems to be a ton of misinformation about skimmers, I often see becket owners call their skimmers compact and hassle free, yet the people whom have switched beckett to NW often complain the beckets were finicky and took up more space compared to the NW. Im pretty sure both beckett and NW work. the question is at what Efficiency? how much energy goes in to gaining each ML of skimmate? what are the benifits of either system?

both becketts and NW are proven to be able to collect skimmate.

I had three mrc skimmers and 2 etss skimmers and a bunch of needlewheel skimmers.
The downdraft skimmer work good but needs a big pump,
will overflow if the outlet pipe is under water when the electicity tuns back on, thats why i got rid of them
skimmate production is good

In my opinion becketts are better than downdrafts, but still needs a big pump,
skimmate production is very good but after cleaning will need about a day to start skimming again
Needlewheels doesn't require any high energy pump so very quiet , skimmate production is very good
Will start skimming right away after cleaning, not sensitive to changes For example the etss and mrc would stop the head foam if you stick your hand in the tank. Most needlewheels will still skim I know this for deltec, H&S, euro-reef and ATB skimmers that I have all used.
Another great thing is the pg&e bill at the end of the month
Get advice from people that have used all three types they will be able to give you a better opinion.
Good luck

Thanks very much victor, just the experience I was looking for. I think I have decided on the new smaller ReefFlo.

You are asking a really good question. After much research and trial and error, I have a recirc with Aquabee pumps. They are quiet, energy efficient, simple to maintain and adjust, and skim very well.

I used a dual becket on my 300 display for the first couple months I had it set up. It worked well after I would dial it in but it was pretty finicky. I was always adjusting the water level. Now I run the reeflo orca 250 and I like it much better. It not only skims better for me but I never have to adjust it. (well I have only had it a few weeks) but so far I like it way better than the becket.
