With FFA meetings and stuff that can occasionally last until 7-8 o'clock at night it was really nice for him to be able to call when the meetings were about over so dad could head in to get him. Him having a phone has also come in very handy since then multiple times (he's almost 17 now), weather he's broke down on the side of the road and doesn't have the right tools on his truck (yes, he carries his own tools) or to let the parents know where he's going to be after school or if something unexpected comes up.

So there are reasons for SOME kids to have phones - most of them certainly don't have any reason to have one besides to yak back and forth with their friends when they should be concentrating on school work. There are a few who do have real reasons to have one though .

Dino - Read what I wrote. No need for any child to carry a cell phone during school hours.

And you know what. When I was a kid, I didn't have a cell phone. When my baseball/basketball/football practice was over, I went to the local pay phone, called my house and let it ring twice. That was the signal to my parents that it was time to pick me up. Was it perfect, no, bit 95% of the time it worked.

Its pretty hard to use a phone after school if you don't take it with you in the first place .

And they don't have pay phones here anymore - quite literally they've taken all but a couple out here because they're not profitable anymore. It costs more for a place to have one than they bring in. If you want to use a pay phone here anymore you're just out of luck.

thats true everywhere about the pay phones.

its kind of a catch 22 - if kida have a phone they are gonna use it and if they don't then after hours they have almost no way to get in touch with thier guardian

Yeah, I can't stand those emails too. Whenever I get one, I just call the sender up instead of responding to them in an email.

I think texting is very convenient. Sometimes the recipient is not in a place where they can talk, and texting is perfect. I bartend, getting score updates from the High School football kids that I used to coach while bartending is nice. I also find it helpful while looking for subs for my volleyball team the day of. I don't know where these people might be, but they can almost always check their text messaging throughout the day. And even a simple "Good Morning" is nice to give or receive. Could I live without it, sure, but I could probably live without a cell phone too.

Please READ what I wrote Dino.

"What in the world is so important to a 13 year old that they need to carry a cell phone during school hours?"

They can bring them, throw them into their lockers. There is no need for a child to carry a cell phone into a class.

I'm just saying there are reason's for a kid to have a phone occasionally. Heck, there are adults that shouldn't be allowed to carry a darn cell phone. Using it during school hours? No, I think it'd be cool if they found a way to jam cell phone signals within a certain area (I know there are products out there now to do it). Then you could pretty much kill any using them in school, but they do come in handy during non-school hours. And since pay phones are rare to come across anymore you almost have to know somebody with one if you don't have somewhere to go that has a land line.

I think what Dino is trying to say (lord help me, i'm thinking like Dino) is that if kids have the cell at school for after school calls then they is no way they are gonna leave it in thier locker, kids will break any rule they can get away with and the ability to put a phone in your pocket and hide it and use it without being noticed is gonna keep them taking it in class with them

I never used my locker in HS, I wouldn't WANT to use many of the lockers here. Nearly half of the lockers at the HS here don't even lock anymore .

I text durning school as half of teachers don't care unless they are teaching us something. When texting a couple people at a time, and depending on the messages, I can get atleast 20 in a minute easly. Like stated before, I handful of the text are very short text. ( hey, was^, yea, nope, ect. )

Btw, sorry for getting this thread so serious . I'd never want any kids using them during school hours but if I had a phone at that age I would never let it out of my own hands. There were a few kids when I was in school that they made a heck of a lot of money going around taking things out of lockers

Edit: Btw, I think we're secretly agreeing. There isn't any reason for the little devils to USE a phone during school hours . I think we just have different opinions on what carry means!

Now back to your regular scheduled program about DKH buying Batman and Robin....well, yeah.
