tunze or modified maxi-jet

my closed loop is run by a sequence pump....it says RPM 1350/1650, cust. Part No. M0220

my return is a Gen X Model PCX 55 HP, 1141 GPH, Speed 3200 is what i read on the pump

I have one seio M2600, the other isn't running right, and one seio 820 in it now.

One of my returns from the sump I modified using 3/4" pipe I think, maybe and inch...the other return is normal loc-line

I still get detritus on some of my rocks, so not enough flow moving around in there.

I need better flow, not sure what to do though to correct it? Thinking of buying the maxi jet mod like this....http://www.twopartsolution.com/index...roducts_id=379

or looking in for sale forums for a used tunze setup.....

i've been told 25 x turnover is good for sps tank...so i would need 3375 gph in my 135 oceanic reef tank.

'The new ECOMOD works with all Maxi-Jet pumps to increase the flow by 10 times the standard output'

So does that mean a 1200 will push 2950 gph? doubtful. premium aquatics has got the 1600gph modkit (low flow mod for the 1200) and the actual maxijetmod.com site has the 2000gph mod kit. Only difference is impellar size so if ya need more flow, may wanna look at one of theres.

I have been reading up on flow rates and I have read that 35-40x is going rate now. So your 135 would need around 5400 gph. I plan on running around 5000 gph in my 120g when it is setup.

I would love to have some of the Tunze streams, but they are out of my price range. I do have a couple of mj 1200 laying around so I might give the 1600 gph mode a shot. I am also looking into the Koralia 4. I might try a couple of the mods and a couple K4s and my flow requirements should be met.

Just my thoughts though.

fwiw, in my 55g, I was using a Seio for a while, 1500gph. Liked it, thought I'd give the maxijetmod a try, picked up the low flow mod kit (1500gph) and found it to be far more flow than the seio pushed out. I think their flow estimates are very conservative. I plan on a couple of the high flow kits for my 220g, tunzes are out of my range and it would take more koralia #4's to get the same flow, even though i prefer the koralia's over maxijets. Nicer flow pattern.

Your kinda comparing apples to oranges here. If you can afford the Tunze then there obviously a better made product than the Maxi-jet. If your looking at adding 2 Tunze Streams with a controller roughly $900 or 2 Maxi-jet mods roughly $80.

i was looking at some of the used ones for sale online. No, I can't afford a new setup of tunze.

Wanted to see if the expensive technology was really necessary for water flow. Sometimes gadgets take over this hobby.....

any idea's on what size of tunze that would work in a 135 gallon tank? I read alot in the for sale ads that they had too much flow. I'd hate to buy one and have the same problem.

the tunze should not be too much flow. Ray has two in his 180 that point into the rockwork, on a controller, and they work great. You would need the lowest rated one...cant remember the model number-sorry.

If you get the variable speed ones and a controller you can turn them up or down to suit.

They are not cheap tho....but worth it in my opinion.

Paul.

thanks Paul, I see in your 600 gal. thread your closed loop isn't using a spray bar. Is it because you have sand or another reason. I'm using the spray bar, and BB.
