29 gal sps

well I decided to convert my 29 gallon mixed reef to an SPS tank. I am going to need some help in doing so, so I need some advice from the experts. I am on kind of a tight budget and I only want some beginner, forgiving SPS (i.e Monti Cap.). I will either be getting a 250w retro w/ ballast from a local reefer or a 250 w sunpod. Do I need a skimmer?? I was hoping no but if I have to I will. What kind of supplements would I need to keep Alk, Ca etc up?? I was thinking of getting some Koralia's for powerheads as I can deall with the bulkiness. I have read the threads at the top and now I just want to here some first hand experiences from everyone on this Forum. TIA!!!

You don't need a skimmer but they sure do make things easier IMO if you have much bioload at all in the tank. 2 Part works well to suppliment Ca and alk. Randy's 2 part homeade recipe is dirt cheap and works very well.

I've been using it for a couple of years now with good results.

Thanks a lot. I don't think I am going to have a heavy bioload. Right now I have one occelaris clownfish. I might get another clown and another small fish. do you use RO/DI water for the 2 part?? Thanks for the help I hope once I get things started I can start a journal on RC.

I do but I don't guess it's absolutely necessary since you are adding so little. If you already have it why not

I've got about the same size tank with a bunch of SPS. I don't run a skimmer, but I large water changes (about 40%) every 2 weeks and run carbon constantly. I have a feeling a skimmer would help me get better color from my acros, everything else is fine though.

As for supplementation, I use the 2-part from www.twopartsolution.com .
