Paul B from Long Island talks alot about using bottles in his old reef. Check out his threads.

PVC pipes work well for eels too and are easily encrusted with coralline algae. There are two ways out with PVC pipes also.
Paul B uses beer bottles to give his reef a "natural" look. As far as I know he doesn't use them for eels.

i don't know how true this is...but this is what i've heard
items such as beer bottles and other similarly shaped things aren't good for tanks because the water in them usually sits for a long time and gets no flow..?...i guess if the eel/fish/whatever is swimming in and out of it all the time, there'd be some water movement.. anyone else here this?

if its being used by the eel it should be fine, But like kaihonu82 said you dont want it to be a dead spot. There was a thread on RC not to long ago about putting Liquor bottles in your reef. Someone wanted to put a Jager bottle in their reef with a small light inside it. A hole was drilled to put the light inside and then the bottle was coated with a clear sealant so that he could keep the label. If krylon Fusion makes a clear spray you could probably use that. Ive seen many threads where reefers use fusion to paint in tank objects.
GL and post some pics if you do it. |

How about one of those hard hat divers w/ the treasure chest connected to a air pump;...that would look cool.

I like the bottles, though the last one looks like a beach that needs some volunteer cleaning done. Isnt the aluminum can bad for the reef tank?

Never use bleach to clean anything that goes in your tank. Instead use vinegar.

If you do use bleach, neutralize it with the vinegar prior to putting it in your tank.
Never get enough of your tank Paul B!! ![]()

All of the rock, bottles, cans and even the water was bleached before it was put in the tank 37 years ago. How bad can it be? The can is coated with resin.

Although it can be done the water will become stagnant within the bottle. If that's something you can/want to deal with go for it.
I prefer to not introduce potential problems into my aquarium.
