The sump should be fine. I have a 40g sump that was used for both of my 125g and 135g and it didn't over flow when the power went out unless I had the water level high. As long as he leaves half of the volume (22.5g) or more then he will be fine. If the elec goes out and the water drains from the tank it will dump only around 10-20g max. I am also taking in consideration that he is not going to have anything in his sump other than the skimmer which depending on the size can take anywhere from 3-6gallons of volume. He will just be doing alot of top offs!!

I would mark a line at 40% for the sump so he knows not to fill up past that. JMO
