Salifert is all I use for everything. I trust there method development and quality control. Proper storage and shelf life is critical and technique is necessary to accurate results. I have doing doing analytical testing for a living for the last 20 years.

All bases covered here. If you want to do it perfectly do it this way. GC I might have to take one out of your playbook on the alk and ca.

The Elos Alk test is awesome. Unlike the Salifert test it's way faster and only has one reagent. Also, I've noticed that my Salifert Alk test is off and has been testing high. Check the Salifert forum, lots of others have reported this as well.

Where or how do you store the Salifert tests?

A closet is a good place. Heat, cold, and sun light can degrade certain chemicals.

I use all Salifert. Never had a problem. All kits stored in a linen closet, nowhere near the tank.

Been hearing some bad reports about Salifert's Alk test kit lately, any truth to this? I've used Sailfert's for alk testing before and never had any issues.

so i like the lamotte alk, it's even easier to perform than salifert and accurate, and i've checked new purchases against old kits over time and they match up well. the only lamotte calcium test i bought was totally wrong, probably expired. salifert's been my most consistent over time, i think their alk/ca/mag kits have a good shelf life. that's probably the thing we miss the most, the fact that these chemicals have a shelf life.

basic nitrogen cycle, use the cheapest thing possible. maybe a damsel.

i think the best indicator for phosphate is nuisance algae when nitrates are understood, but that's just me.
