Sump pump/return flow question....
Ok guys, what a tremendous help you all have been so far on my system and all the quests involved so far. I have my sump running(30gal) in my basement, nine feet below my tank. I have a Lifereef HOB overflow on back with a Hofer gurgle pipe on it. I have 1" pipe from my overflow to my sump and 3/4" on my return. I spent most of my day removing bubbles from the system. And HOORAY!! I was succesful! Some things are still bothering me though. I cannot run my pump wide open because it is too much flow for the overflow, even at nine feet of head. My pump is a Panworld 100px-x. Great pump and extremely quiet(of course it is in my basement). I know with the Hofer stand pipe setup, it reduces flow to help control noise. I want more flow though. Question 1: Can I put a ball valve on my overflow line to my sump? I have tried "t" ing off the return line and put a ball valve on it to return some water to the sump....created a many micro bubbles. Question 2: Is there any way to run the overflow wide open without the noise/standpipe on it? Question 3: What is better, Hofer gurgle or Stockman standpipe? Thanks again guys/gals.

Never put a valve on the overflow, put it on the pump, or divert some of the pumps out put back into the sump.
Valve on the overflow is a flood waiting to happen. The pump decides the flow rate, the overflow just puts out what was just put in. Sorry Im no help on the stand pipe Q. But Ive noticed that if you slow down the sump turnover, it takes care of what it needs to do but with less noise and bubbles. IMO Good Luck!

I concur with Bri Guy, what ever you do don't put a ball valve on the overflow for anything other than to cut it off completely (for water changes or something like that) To balance out hte flow all you should have to do is put a valve on the return pipe to cut back that flow back tot hte tank until it balances out. The valve on the return line will only add head pressure (illusion of it to the pump anyway) and should not hurt the pump at all.
As for the different types of stand pipes, I can't say but it seems that it would be easy enough to try the different types and see what works best for you in your particular environment.

Thanks guys....I decided against the valve on the overflow. I think I will just get another overflow and then I should be able to open up my pump. It is quiet and no bubbles(that makes my wife happy).
