Viper Moray eel??

I recently got back into the hobby and have been looking everywhere for a Viper Moray eel. I had one in my tank about 15 years ago. It was the only time I've ever seen this eel. It had a long jaw, with huge fang teeth. He was a dark red color. I am wondering if it had been mislabled when I originally bought him and maybe it goes by another name. The only thing I have seen that is remotley close is a dragon eel.

Does any have any information on a Viper Moray?

Also, I have been thinking of purchaseing my next fish from one of the online sites. Is that a particular site that I should avoid or one that you recommend?

Thanks for any help guys. This place is the best!

Are you thinking of Enchelycore nigricans?

They're not very common but can be found once in a while. The ones I've seen have gone anywhere from $50 to $200.

For online stores, I'd go with liveaquaria.com, marinecenter.com and marinedepotlive.com.

I think that may be it Andy!! It looks pretty darn close to what I had before. Is that a Viper, or does it only go by the name name you had for it, the Enchelycore nigricans?

Thanks for finding that for me. I really hope I can find another one someday.

Enchelycore nigricans is the scientific name...Viper Moray is the common name.

Sometimes, when searching for info and only having the common name, you won't find much. If you can get ahold of the scientific name you can find much more info.

It may be a long shot, but call around to your local fish stores. Give them the common name and scientific name and have them ask their wholesalers. They may be able to special order one for you.

Viper morays are from the Caribbean area. Maybe check with fish suppliers from Florida.
