Hagen T5's

A lfs here just recieved new Hagen T5 lighting. The fixtures are set up as two bulbs sharing a single parabolic reflector. But, the retros are singe bulb parabolic reflectors. It looks like a nice retro kit to me, but I was wondering if anone else has seen them or tried them.

I don't know anything about them, but make sure they are T5HO and not just T5

They are HO. The LFS I used to work at now carries them. The retrofits come with individual reflectors (kinda bulky ones, though), while the fixtures only have one large one (not what you want). They definitely wouldn't stack up to a good IceCap or Aquactinics setup--probably not even a Tek setup (would be my guess). I can't say too much because there haven't been any objective measurements on these lights.

I've seen these and they look good and have a nice look to them.

I think you can grow most anything probably even sps if the sps are like inches away from it. They are also VERY cheap so people can have decent lights.

They aren't the best, but not bad!

They are t5ho. I am currently running t5ho, but I am not afraid of upgrading. I am courious to see if anyone will test them. The only downside I see to the retro kit is the size of the retro reflector. I bet it puts out some good numbers though.

I bet given 6 bulbs, you could grow sps with them without having to keep them at the top of your tank. I grew sps with an 8x39, with a single flat reflector, in my 90 for quite a while.

non individual parabolic refelectors+ not that great.

maybe for pure supplemental lights, but with the same bulbs and better refelctors then those t5s would be more than " supplemental".

The fixture is a two bulb with a huge parabolic reflector. I don't care much for it, but the retro is a different story altogether. It is a single bulb parabolic reflector. Looks like a very nice budget priced retro kit.

I would like to see a test of the reflector to see how it compares to the AquaZ, Icecap, SLS Tek, and the SLS Tek2.

Like I said, my guess is that they probably would be less intense, but without empirical testing, there is no way to know for sure

the key term is "empiracle". although we have some close non lab testing on shared reflector designs that never have come close to the real deal reflector setups
