Most people paint their pvc black. Black PVC has a higher leval of polypropelene in it anyways which can leak out if exposed to water.

Yes, Krylon Fusion spray paint will work. Will any of the pipe be under water?

Nothing with spray paint should be in contact with the water.

Not true. Some paint can be used under water with no harm.

as far as I know, black ABS should be inert and not leach anything into the water. I don't know anything about black PVC. I only know of PVC coming in white or grey. At HD or Lowes you can find larger (~2") ABS fittings, but no pipe. Try to find it at an RV place. Large campers have to use abs pipe for their plumbing (that's what I'm told). I'm on the hunt this weekend, I'll let you know what kind of a place I find it at.

Look in the section for sprinkler system supplies (should be right in there with the plumbing). The Lowes where I live sells black SCH 80 PVC. I noticed it for the first time just a couple days ago. I didn't notice if it was significantly more expensive than the white PVC, though.

I've used it, with no obvious problems so far. . .it's only been in there about 5-6 months, though.

I have submerged krylon. No problems.

lol, the coralline actually grew on it faster than the unpainted PVC...

Oh, and ABS is fine as well, I heave seen this brought up before and it was confirmed that it is reef safe.

Disclaimer - Do not try this indoors

This will probably get flamed but it has worked for me in my pond and on a few fittings in my reef. Do not do this indoors and wear gloves.. nitrile or chemical resistant.

I have used white PVC and a mix of acetone and RITZ black dye. I put 2 packages of the dye in about a pint of acetone and mix in a metal coffee can or stainless steel tub. Then take a cotton cloth and evenly wipe the pipe with the black mixture (sponges work great for large jobs). Apply a second coat if necessary. The acetone will slightly dissolve the pipe and cause the dye to "soak in" to the surface of the pipe. Let dry and soak in water for a few hours (or longer) to allow the acetone to disperse from the pipe. Be sure to complete any glue connections prior to this process. Also, any glued areas will not take dye so you need to have the surface prepped.

The beauty of this is that the dye permeates the surface of the pipe and makes it very resistant to scratching.

Acetone is a nasty substance and you should read the label and MSDS sheet before messing with it.
