To quarantine, or not to quarantine........
I was just wondering how many people really quarantine every fish before introducing them to their main tank. Or does everyone take a chance now and then and skip the quarantine. This question came to mind after another visit to my favorite LFS. I purchased two large yellow tangs that have been in their tank for two weeks and have been eating well. I figured that that would have been ample time for any illness to show up. They are doing fine and eat like pigs! But then there are some LFS's that I wouldn't dare put trust in like that.

i used to just observe the fish at the lfs and if they looked good throw them in. but eventually i would get one that looked fine and when i got it home it would be ok for a couple of weeks and then get sick or have ick and wipe everything out so now i qt everything aggresively for 2-3 weeks.
Its cool looking at ur tank knowin that no ich is gonna pop up. |

You should Qt every fish you add to your tank or else you are just asking for trouble and have a good chance of introducing a disease into your tank. I myself would rather not take that chance.

I don't, but I very rarely buy new fish and they all come from Drs. Foster and Smith. Also I'm not buying tangs or anything really touchy, my stocklist is a maroom clown, royal gramma, clown goby and sixline. I did buy a black and white clown from swf for another tank and qt just in cause, which turned out to be good idea since it died of brook. However I would never buy anything from stores locally and throw right in my tank.

Lesson learned bought some fish from fish store do the usually toss them in. A serious case of ich wipped out everything. GG now I have to start from scratch so QT is safer.

I take the chance if the fish is acquacultured as they tend to be much more hardier then caught.

I quarantine all fish unless I have some reason to believe a particular fish won't do well in my QT. An example is my Regal Angel...I've heard they don't do well in QT, so I found what appeared to be a healthy specimen and put him straight into the display. I realize that's taking a chance, but I decided to take the risk because I wanted this fish. So far so good...

Unbelievable! This topic gets entirely different responses on this forum depending on when it's asked.
All I'll say is that it's up to you.
