Thanks for the info on the chaeto stuff. I did not think it was overkill as I like all the information I can get!

Hi Aquabucket,

If I remember correctly having read this thread from the beginning, this tank has now been set up for quite some time. I am curious as to how it is currently doing and do you have any current pics?

I have made several attempts to upload pics of my 2 Reef tanks and even taking the pics in the smallest and lowest quality on my digital camera, they are still to big for the allowed size on the message board! And I have even made them smaller in Adobe PhotoShop. The 50kb allowed by Reef Central is, in my opinion an oddball size!

Susie,

The tank is doing extremely well! I'll be posting some updated pics within the next week I hope.

Try uploading your images to a free site like photobucket or imageshack. Once they are hosted you can post them here with much larger sizes.

The 2 powerheads in the corners face forward like the HOB and are modified lift tube powerheads for under gravel filters. They give out a wide stream of flow like the HOB. The other 2 powerheads send flow across the tank from each side.
Mindboggling simplicity!! I'm in the process of setting up a 58 (first reef tank) and will use yours as one of my patterns. Can you give some more details on the powerhead make & model #'s ? If it's a DIY arrrangement, what would you use off the shelf?

Thanks for the tip on photobucket or imageshack. I will give that the old college try.

Looking forward to the new images of your nice tank!

caesar Gdi~ Thanks!

Bruce513~ I have a couple of Azoos and The other 2 I am not sure of. I like small compact powerheads and use some off name stuff. As long as you clean them regularly they should last.

SLODEN53~ Good luck! I look forward to seeing some pics!

Anyway I got to borrow a camera for a couple of days and took a few shots before my actinics came on. The camera I am using this time is a mere 2.1 mega pixel Fiji Fine Pix 2300. Its not the greatest camera but I did manage to get some decent shots in manual mode.

FTS @ 18 months:

Blue Anthelia:

Pipe Organ:

Red Lobophyllia:

Red and Blue Symphyllia: (free from Reefhotspot.com ~ RC tank challange winner)

That's all for now. I'll be taking some more over the next few days. I hope you enjoy the updates and I look forward to all your comments!

pbukow ~ Thanks. Yours should grow up nicely. Mine started from a frag the size of a thumbnail.

SLODEN53 ~ Your welcome Susie! Thanks for your continued interest in my tank!

Sorry this is so late but here is a shot of the back of the tank showing some chaeto just after pruning:

That's all the pictures I could get this time before I had to get the camera back. I'll update again at the end of summer.

Cheers and happy reefing,

~Spike

Red Lobophyllia:

Aquabucket, beautiful Lobophyllia! Do you feed this coral, and how picky is it in terms of water quality, motion and lighting? I'd love to add a splash of red to my tank as this one does. Is this a common color?

I only feed it a few times a month. I should feed it more though. It is a very slow grower. This particular one has been in captivity for over 7 years now. It had a 9" long stalk when I first got it over 2 years ago. I cut it down before placing it in my tank.

In order for it to expand fully you must keep Alk and Calc levels stable. It does not like high flow either.

Red lobos are not that uncommon but I have yet to see one as intense as this one.

Here is a pic of it when I first got it in Jan of 2005:

Thanks again Susie.

A few days ago I decided to make some major changes to my stocking along the top of the tank. I traded in my green nepthea and scroll coral for some acroporas and a purple rimmed monti cap. I am going to stock the rest of the tank along the top now with SPS ~ mostly ORA stuff.

I'll post some new pics as soon as I can borrow the camera.

Great looking tank aquabucket!!!! Its wonderful to see someone having success and KEEPING IT SIMPLE! I think sometimes all the technology can be bad.
When I had only a 29 gal tank w/ hang on filter and power compacts my tank maintenance was next to nothing....and my tank still looked good. Each time I go bigger, I upgrade and add things now I have a huge tangle of power cords, a BIGGER power bill and ALOT more "tinkering" to keep things maintained! Not to mention the $$$$ that goes into it too!

Sorry this is so late.

Basically import/export refers to how much food and fish waste a tank can handle before it gets out of balance and all that food and waste accumulates instead of being broken down, consumed or filtered out.

I appreciate the kind words everyone!

Susie ~ Sorry I don't have pictures yet but I decided against the SPS corals and traded for a nice clam and a purple goniopora tenuidens. Both are doing very well. The goni has excellent polyp extension and is growing. I did not get the extension from this coral until I began dosing manganese and iron for it.

I also traded out the Yellow tang a day after it ripped my pipe organ to shreds. Losing the pipe organ that way was tough but I did save enough of it that it may again some day be as large as it once was.

All in all the tank is still doing very well and I hope to borrow a camera soon so I can give you all a nice update.
