I have to disagree with you on the mysteri wrasse, Tom. Mine is very wary of its tank mates and always has an eye out for an escape route. It is mostly in and among the rocks, and gets chased by the fairy and rhomboid. The only fish with less time in the water column is the long-nose hawk. And mine is the largest I have seen in a tank. Of course, personalities can change rather quickly!

Jonathan, We were going to get one a while back and did lots of research on them (as we do with any new addition, prior to adding them ) and read more bad than good. Just as with a 6-line, until they are established they are usually model citizens. Once it establishes it's territory they often become very aggressive with "defending" it from any new wrasses (and occassionally with existing ones as well.. but the new ones especially). That is just what I read and what I was told by distributers as well. I don't have any personal experience because based on what I read we will never be adding one to our tank

Amazing tank Nyvp, i just sat down and read every page... WOW.
Could you show some pics of your cistern, i am thinking about doing the same thing to keep my water temp down. wondering how well its working? i love the marble and so does my Gf apperently i HAVE to set my 180 gal up the same way LOL. I figure if i have enough water i can get away with no chiller as it will work as a heat sink.

Any thoughts?

how is your tank going to be a good representation of a true coral reef with out at least 30 more fish and 20 more corals in there.

Well my cistern hasn't been installed yet, I'm waiting for the contractor to start my driveway. The other thing is up until now my tank was sitting at 75/76 degree's with the 250's. Now I'm hitting 78 without cabinets so its time to install it. The positive to the added water volume is stuff happens a lot slower . Neg is more supplements to keep tank up. Then again if your corals use X amount of calc then it should be the same. The big point is water changes are a lot bigger.
As of the marble its great but make sure you add enough for your feet so you can stand on it.

Are you planning to run your cistern 24hrs or are you going to put a feed pump on a controller and just loop onto system when water temp gets higher? That way you could keep from heating that body of water at night and cooling it when lights are on. Downside would be wouldn't add to water volume and could stagnate a bit when offline. Your thoughts?

yes for all those reasons I will be running it 24/7. if you run it with a small pump (seq 4200) it will turn over 1-2 times an hr which is perfect for what I'm looking for. The point being by doubling my system volume from 1k-2k the lights being on for 6-8 hrs dont have enough time to heat it up as well as the buffering effect of adding such a large volume. nothing can happen quickly let alone any po4 or n03 build up.

what are you doing for water changes?

what is your temp now?

is this the first summer you have run the whole system?

what is the cistern water temp?

perhaps you could have different pumps on temp probes to run faster or slower depending on need.

i have a 1200 gallon cistern underground in my yard i am going to use for water changes but am considering trying to configure it as additional water volume.here in los angeles our weather is wonderful near the beach but perhaps a bit cool in the winter for continuous use of a storage tank in the ground.

cistern isnt running yet. without the cistern my water is 78. Yes first summer so far but the canopy isnt closed in yet so that will make a differnce. The ground stays the same all year round so what wont change. its cheaper and easier to heat the tank then to cool it. Hope this helps

what is the cistern water temp?

i think most of us wish we had the heating cooling reversed.

very nice! that blue throat is a nice addition to the tank. i love the triggers. they swim so different than any other fish. tank is looking good. just needs skins over the stand.

asmodeous, I think you are right, it's a galaxea/tooth coral.

nyvp, does it tend to have long feelers stretch out from it, from time to time? if so, give it some room, they need about 6" or they will sting other corals.
