drain pipe question

I don't currently have a tank set up but the last one I did have I had a home made durso standpipe that I could never seem to get quite right and was noisy or had other problems with so I wasn't happy with it. I was wondering if it would be better to just have a straight standpipe with a 45 degree angle at the top and just let the water slide in through the slanted part of the 45 pipe? I understand that slanted pipes are better than straight and I can't think of any problems with this.

I tried a 90 and 180 degree using PVC parts, and both made slurping noise. I got a small piece of airline tubing with a pump, drilled a hole in the top of the 180 and fished the tube down the side of the drain pipe that goes into the tank. No more noise.

I did as above. Connected 2 90 degree elbows and then drilled a hole in the top and placed airline tubing. No slurping. Silent after adding a top cover to the overflow.

What kind of cover did you put on your overflow? I think that is where a lot of my noise was coming from because I did the drilled hole and the airline tubing and everything like that but still kinda noisy because I didn't have a cover. Or what could I use to make one? Should I silicon in on?
