One thing you can try is looking at the glass with polarized sunglasses. If you see interference patterns that means the pane is tempered. Unfortunately, I don't think not seeing patterns garuntees...

I wouldn't pull out the bioballs all at once. They are a big part of your biological filtration now. You will re-cycle your tank (at least to some extent). I would take them out a few at a time...
