What type of filtration are you running on the tank? Is it a sump? a HOB? Canister? How much live rock?

The short answer is Yes you need a protien skimmer to remove waste from the water.

I have seen mislabeled fish before, infact I got a mislabeled cichlid from petsmart once. Turned out to be a Boryli after i got HER home. Those things...
