Do you mean to resize the image to a smaller file? or a winzip type software? If you have win XP and want an easy resizer, use the resizer power toy located at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p.../powertoys.asp Just download and intall it, right click on the pic, select the size you want to change it to and a copy of the pic will be placed under the same folder as the original.

You're on linux now! Look at gzip. It compresses even better than Winzip.

I'm talking about something the members can use to resize their pictures before they upload them.

BTW, Pete, as I understand it, gzip and other compression software does not work well with images.

It doesn't work well if the file is already compressed. If you winzip (or gzip) a compressed file, it will likely get bigger. gzip a .bmp and is does better than winzip.

What people need to do is use .jpg and reduce the "quality" setting to an acceptable level like in the 80s (my camera's compression uses 93). I use ThumbsPlus to do this, but it isn't real cheap.

Every printer we've ever owned has come with some kind of software to resize. I mostly use Adobe, that came in the Cannon Creative. The card shops also have places to size.

C'mon, people, the question is "Any good free image compression software out there?"

I want to be able to help the not so savy members who email me resize their pictures.

I hate to state the obvious, but the standard microsoft paint program will let you resize, crop, and save as a jpeg file.
Truly, for just posting your pics you don't need anything else.

X11 is a graphics platform typically used on Unix but available for OSX. You can download it from Apple in their developers section. If you upgrade to Panther, it's included.

Once you have it, search for a package called "fink" it's allows you to download open source packages and compile them for OSX; i.e. you get to run all the cool open source stuff available on linux native in OSX.

Gimp is an open source image editing program that is free.

If you're not looking for an image format, MS word may also work good.

Paint Shop Pro has a great optimization tool for JPG graphics .. when you go to 'save as..' head to the advanced tab, and you can play with the compression rates and it will let you know the file size as you go... so this way you can fine tune compression to get the best image quality within the 50kb size limit. and the trial is free..

'Cept that you get the file size down enough and it looks like crap. Paint Shop Pro adds an increadible amount of information to any open pic. Try it yourself. Open a small jpeg and save it without any form of compression. You will see a double in size at best. You are compressing from the altered size, NOT the original file size. That greatly effects the quality of the compressed pic.
