The males are more intense with a violet body and yellow running along the back through the upper caudal lobe.

The females tend to be lavender with a yellow back and caudal fin.

This site has a male and female photo.

Good Luck,

violet vs. lavender huh? arent they the same color? That's why I bought a pH meter. I could never tell the exact shade on my pH test.

Thanks Ed. You seem to always have the answers, maybe I should just PM you next time.

Thanks 294. That's a good pic of a pair together. Their coloration is very similar.
Do they always stay together?
Do you have any other anthias in the tank?

ive got 7 bartletts in a 180. i bought a group of 3 and added a group of 4 smaller females a couple months later. apparently two from the original group were already changing into males, and both continued to change. so now i have 5 females and 2 males. the 2 males display to each other quite often, but i havent seen any direct physical aggression (frayed fins etc.) over the 2 months or so since the sex change became obvious. they tend to stay in the same general area most of the time but usually not in a tight group. the more dominant male will occasionally round everyone up and put on a very nice display.

I was at the LFS tonite and they have many Bartlett's. The owner determines sex by the dorsal fin.
He said the males have a higher & longer dorsal fin. When they display their dorsal it sticks up, almost like a firefish.

I can see the difference, even though all of them have the same body coloration.

Is this an accurate way to sex them?
