Does anyone know what the reaction is when you mix alcohol and clorine

I have always been interested in chemistry and I read that, if you mix clorine and alcohol in a bottle it reacts and pops the bottle. So I decided to try it today and it is LOUD. Does any one know why it does this, I was just wondering. It gives off a white fog which I was also wondering about what it could be. I did this safely and from a long distance. Anyone know, just curious
Oh and I recorded it and I can send you a link because I don't think I should post it on hear.

Well, I'm not a chemist but I imagine the reaction is creating a gas. Anyway, regardless of why, it's causing pressure inside the bottle to build and then soon the bottle ruptures at extremely high speed...what we call an explosion.

What you did is also called a bomb.

Frankly, you should not do such things. It's highly dangerous and oh, in most states, very very very illegal.

Chlorine is also toxic when inhaled. Be careful.

Kitchen chemistry can be fun, but anything that says chlorine, acid, etc., should be handled very carefully.

wow, and i thought i've done some stupid stuff before...

stick to sodium bicarbonate and acetic acid reactions in your kitchen........less chance of dying from a toxic cloud...

or if you like the stuff that goes bang....but has less toxic fumes and hazardous waste cleanup...get yourself a watermelon, cut in half, dig out the inside....

get small 20oz plastic soda bottle, pour 1oz of liquid nitrogen in the bottle, quickly secure top to bottle, QUICKLY put watermelon over bottle.......RUN....

then go take a shower to get watermelon off clothes....

There's a video floating around the internet with a kid blowing his hand off doing this exact same stunt. There is NO way to do it "safely" or "from a long distance". The chemicals begin to react as soon as they're put into the bottle, before you put the cap on it.

You can't control the speed of the reaction or when the reaction starts. There are ways you can accelerate it to make it even MORE dangerous, but you can't slow it down to make it more safe.

Last but not least, bleach is NOT something to be experimenting with. There's a number of other household chemicals you can mix it that will form flamable, caustic, and poisonous gases instantaneously.

Actually this type of thing would be a Police Department Bomb Squad call. Knoxville's bomb squad "disarms" several of these things that fail to detonate every year. Most of our bomb squad officers have started carrying BB rifles in their cars for taking care of these devices. They pop a hole in them to relieve the pressure and render them safe.

fishykid, if you want to make to fishyadult, don't do crazy stuff like that anymore. Chlorine gas can kill you. Chlorine bombs can just do it quicker. Stick to mentos and diet coke - that's good clean fun. Who's got that link?
