BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA - Australian media is reporting that Steve Irwin died in a marine accident.

Irwin was the host of the highly popular "Crocodile Hunter" which aired on Discovery Channel's Animal Planet.

He apparently was killed by a stingray barb during a diving barb during a diving expedition. He was 44.

The accident happened while Irwin was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state, Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its web site.

The paper and other Australian media reporting the death cited police or state government sources.

Telephone calls to Australia Zoo, Irwin's zoo in southern Queensland, were not immediately answered.

That sucks I liked the croc hunter. I figured he'd get done in by a croc or poisonous snake though, not a sea creature.

Way bad. I really enjoyed his stuff. He took fierce chances with pretty combative creatures, and of all things, a critter with nothing but an instinctive twitch---I feel badly for the family.

What a shame, I really feel for his family. What an unbelievable way to die.

His wife Terry is on a wilderness hike and has not been notified that he has died. They are trying to get to her to tell her before she hears it from the media.

Heres the latest, apparently his wife has been notified. So sad. That stingray hit had to be a million to one shot, unbelievable.

The environment lost one of its greatest allies. This is a sad day for us all. My brother is in australia right now and texted me with the news. I also feel like a dear friend is now gone.
