cooling fans in DIY canopy

I am considering using 80MM PC cooling fans for my DIY canopy and was wondering if anyone knows how or has already wired these into an existing coralife ballast (24" 2x65W + 2 LED) or into a plug for a normal outlet

Most PC fans are DC and require some kind of transformer. I'm not sure but you said your light fixture has LED moonlights. I would assume that it also has some kind of built in transformer for those. You would just need to find out how many milliamps that one is. Most people have old transformers for cordless phones and what not laying around the house. If you have one of those just look at the specs on it. They are also readily available at places like Walmart and Radio Shack.

scroll down the page and you will see they have a bunch of them rated at different watts. I just purchased the 18watt one and will be running 10 80mm fans in my canopy. If you want more info I will post some pictures next week when I install them

This should be all you need to run a couple of 80 mm PC fans. I couldnt find the one on Walmarts website but I know for sure they carry one similiar to this one with adjustable voltage. It is over with the digital cameras and TV's and stuff and is like 5 bucks cheaper. Adjustable voltage is good to because if you get these fans installed and you find them a bit loud, you can drop them down to like 9 volts and they run slower but are quieter as well.

300mA isn't going to get you much. Probably 2 fans. If thats all your running I agree that the radio shack transformer will work like a champ. I will be running 10 fans in my canopy and will just be using a potentiometer.

I dont mean to hijack your thread. I was wondering if I put in 2 4in fans does each fan need a seperate transformer or can you wire them together?

Great info guys! I would like to connect two 4" fans. Can any one explain how to rig them up to the transformer?

TIA,
Fredy

just splice them together using basic wire connectors or wire "nuts"...you can get them from HomeDepot. on mine the red wires went to the black wire with a white line on it from the transformer.

4"fans

I just did mine yesterday.
I bought a universal AC/DC adapter ($3.95 at Harbor Freight)

(adjustable voltage so you can slow down the fan = less noise).

Cut off the ends the connectors that come with the adapter. Connect the first fan, a length of good speaker wire and the AC/DC Adapter

Plug the fan in and make sure your air flow is in the correct direction. If not unplug adapter & change the wire connections

UNPLUG THE ADAPTER & connect the speaker wire to the second fan

Plug the fan in and make sure your air flow is in the correct direction. If not unplug adapter & change the wire connections

Cover the connections with some heat shrink tubing

Install in hood.

One more thing, just cut off the connectors that come with the adapter.
