How would you invest $100,000 today ?

I'm not soliciting vacation ideas here but just want to see what other people's idea is in investing $100,000.

I'm helping my mom managing her retirement money. It's already diversed in various different investments. Anyway, one of my mom's investment is a 1 year CD, it is maturing and I got to decide what to do with it.

So let me hear it, what would you do with $100,000 ? How would you invest it today. thanks.

100gs????

I would invest it in myself. Pay off everything except a small portion of the mortgage and move very close to being debt free.

I'll tel you how not to invest it right now...Real Estate. IT'S DEAD. Missed the boat. People who have been pouring their savings into real estate because money was so cheap to borrow will be sitting on overvalue dhouse now for ten years or more. Too late, don't do it wait about five years and there will be some real values on the market. Put the money in a nice safe money market account or a mutual fund. Diversified funds are the place to sit it out now. IMHO.

Best investment is to pay off any loan that isn't very low interest. If she is already in stock, bonds etc. I go back into a CD or look at Money Market savings accounts, some of those pay better int. than CD's/

Without knowing her entire financial picture, age, other investments, living requirements, I can't see anyone offering any advice that I would bank on.

I really matters what age you are Cds and money markets are usually for safety, the younger you are the more risk you can take with your money. For example if you are 20 then 20 % should be in low risk cds bonds stock, 60 should b higher risk; power is going nuts atm if you can find a stock you can buy into right now. A managed money market is another option often having minimum balances. The advantage of a multistock portfolio is that when one bombs you have another to bail you out. Check out some major investment companies or call them up and get some good info before you do anything crazy.

Tell her take at least 10,000 and go see something she always wanted to see, or fly in all of her friends for one heck of a party.

not particularly considering core inflation is roughly 2-3%. you are making 1.8-2.8% on your money.

key word. "preferred stocks" get a GOOD broker that specialises in this, it pays 9 to 12% return, safe. MOST STOCK BROKERS WANT YOU IN MUTUALS, Because they make money weather you do or not. I sure like the returns. Real Estate, where you are, no. Still strong in Pacific NW, but NOT for the novice. Good Luck
