Big FOWLR tanks

I see people building reef tanks in the 300-1000 gallon range, often out of fiberglassed plywood. In other boards I have also seen plenty of FW folks who do the same. But I have yet to see FOWLR's this big. Anyone out there have one to show off? For the rest of us, how would you stock, say, a 8'x4'x3' tank?

Your Tusk and Lunarre Wrasse don't fight? I really like Tusk's and wanted to get one, but have never considered it b/c I always thought it would fight with my Lunare Wrasse....

What order did you add your fish?

Personnal I would rather go with 2-250gal tanks than 1-500gal tank. Because unlike a reef tank where you can mix different corals together without a problem, and even setup areas where the lighting isn't bright for lps and softies, one large tank limits the fish you can place in the tank. Even in large tank some fish will cause problems with other fish but by having 2 tanks you can seperate fish and in the long run actually have more fish. They is why I went with 2-260gal tanks instead of 1-500gal tank as some fish I have in one tank could never go with fish that I have in the another tank.

It's usually safe to mix Hogs together with other wrasse and even keep more then 1 Hog together, just make sure there is a size difference. But it's usually not good to mix together 2 wrasses as they will fight to the death most of the time, specially 2 wrasse from the Thalassoma family.

Marrone you have two big FOWLR's care to share any full tankshots of your systems and inhabitants? I have a 100 and a 75 Undy tank so I'm not in the 200+club yet!

Hey, good thinking Marrone! I'm currenly hatching a plan for a caribbean tank with a nice queen angel as the centerpiece. Think 250G is large enough?
Oh, I I too would love to see some pics of those two 250's!

I have some shot and I really should take more but I'm lazy, and I even have the camera right next to the tank. I'll post some shot later tonight. It's hard to get good pictures as the fish are always moving around.

Here's a picture of my Napolian Wrasse, about 12", about 1 years or so ago. Very slow growing fish considering that it eats a lot of food and in the wild get very large.

Here are picture of the 2-260 tanks side by side. You don't see the black oak stand and the tops are open on the canop of each tank. Each tank is 6' long and 3' height.

I didn't get the tanks drill as I didn't wanted a sump under the tank. I'm running a eheim wet/dry on eat tank. The DME is in another tank but there is a 4' Zebra eel and a 3'+ Snowflake eel that you don't see.

You can't see a lot of the fish that I have in the tanks and because the picture is so far back, to get both tank in the same picture you lose scale of the size of the fish.

A couple of reason, first I had a # of very aggressive fish in the tank and some where going at my Nap. wrasse so I decided I need to take out some of the problems and the Clown was it. Also Clown triggers need really good water quailty, unlike some of the other triggers, and because of the amount of fish and the feeding that I do the nitrates would go up and the Clown trigger was effected by it quite abite.

I really nice to see the all these Fish tanks where there is some rock on the bottom and the rest of the tank is left fully open creating a lot of swimming room.

I think we should rename this thread, "Tanks for your massive eel." A four foot zebra is huge. Do you have a photo of the beast?

The Lunar was the first fish in, I had him for about 1 1/2 years befor the Husk, when I added the Husk into my old 180 gallon the Lunar harassed him for about 2-3 days straight none stop, then he finally gave up and haven't any real issues since then and that was 2 years now.

Its not too big but here are some pics of my old 300g tall tank before I traded it for a 600g. I did not have any big fish but rather about 30-35 small to medium size fish.
