Cutting Eggcrate
What is the best method for cutting eggcrate? The stuff seems really brittle and I don't want to break of big chunks

I use a set of flush cut pliers for working on electronic. It leaves a nice clean edge as you cut away the squares

I just smash through one line with a heavy knife then bust off the leftover tabs. Start to finish takes 30 seconds and only wastes 1/4".

Although a hatchet would work. A double ended axe would be more effective and much more civilized.

No plasma or acetelene torches?

plasma cutters and acetelene are so 20th century. In the reefkeeping hobby, we are only interested in cutting edge technology. now, an electron beam cutter, that's cool, but rather expensive.

I use needle nose pliers to twist/snap off the connecting pieces in the shape/size I need. Very quick, although sometimes it does leave a small burr.

I'm not very mechanically inclined, so I leave the cutting to my local eggcrate fabricator.
