i am moving all the contents of my 55 to my new 90 gal and basically want to start new (same rock and fish though) i have heard of people somehow cooking their rocks to get rid of detritus and algae, what is the process of doing this , and does this hurt the rock (kill the coraline algae and other things on the rock too?

Cooking means different things to different people...
Yes, it does harm the life on the rock in some ways. The coraline will be gone. I usually do this to rocks that have some algae problem, and have never done it to an entire tank of rocks. I put it in a bucket of saltwater with good flow and surface air exchange. Change the water at least weekly picking crud off as needed. Keep this in the dark. Do this for 4 to 8 weeks or until the rocks are clean as you want them. |
