Urchins
What are they good for? Besides looking interesting

They will eat some algaes. Coraline in particular but they do munch on some of the more nusiance algaes just not as much.
The urchin will also help spread coraline throughout your tank. Cardinal fish may develop a symbiotic relationship with longspineyh urchins but it's not too common in captivity. |

I have a short spined urchin and it has not botherd a thing in my tank. The pincushion urchinas are more noted for decorating themselves with what ever they bump into. but the others are much more nimble.

Urchins tend to be pretty clumsy... so watch out - they can knock things over.
Longspined urchins are venomous and can deliver a painful sting. Relatively good glass cleaners though, especially in a predator tank(without triggerfish, which will eat them).

my urchins hasn't walked all over anything except the glass and some barren rocks. I've had him for almost 6 months now. Oh he did clean my thermometer the other day.
I have a bunch of shrooms, a meat coral, acro frag, clam, xenia, rbta, some galaxia and a bunch of zoos. |

so tuxedos would be good choices it appears from your reefkeeping link as I wanna collect coral, and actually would like some tank defense against unwaited "guests"

My urchin walked on my corals but it was no big deal. They recovered in a matter of minutes. He was very nimble though and never knocked anything over. I just got rid of him a few days ago because he got too big for my tank.

I like diadema urchins as well (the one pictured directly above). But, it eventually got too large for my 120 and I had to move it to a larger customer's tank.
