Things that glow in the night
Should have used a tripod, but I was just looking for something to quickly test a new high-speed memory card.

It's a Minolta A2. It can do a much better job, but I was too lazy to bring out the tripod. Lighting was low, so I was shooting at f2.8 and 1/5th second exposure just handheld.
The colors aren't quite right, but I guess it's hard to get them right under that sort of lighting. I tried manual and automatic white balance, with only a mild change and no real improvement. The colors are much more vibrant in person, and the first pic especially had color shift and saturation loss. In person it's very bright orange. |

Hmmm.... Choosing long exposure macro shots to test a high speed CF card? I'd thought you'd try shooting a tang or something that's a bit more 'action' orientated.
I like the pics - does that first one glow pink under actinics? That's way cool.

I was testing how quickly I could shoot another frame and keep shooting. I actually took a lot of photos, in rapid sequence. I did it this way just because it happened to be the state of the tank when I came home with the card.

That's awsome... Wanna frag it?
As far as shooting quickly, the length of the exposure is probably your limiting factor. But hey, whatever - they're cool shots.

It is a frag, rather small. I think it's maybe 2" total.
You're right, a real test for speed would be in daylight. I had run into card speed issues shooting in this light before, and it was better with the Ultra II card (though it still seems slow). I was shooting at 8mp TIFF, so it's 24mb per file. I'm wondering if the SD to CF adapter I'm using could slow down the card. I bought the SD card because I can put it in my Pocket PC and e-mail/display/copy photos on the spot. The camera takes CF so I bought an adapter. I guess I need to do some testing with and without the adapter on the computer. |

when doing your manual white balance, are you first shooting a picture of something white? stick a white object into your tank under the light and take a pic. this will set it

I was using something in front of the tank, but I guess that's not good enough. Good point. I'll need to find some bright white plastic to put in there.

Reviving a good thread. If you've got actinic pictures, let's see them.

It is some reddish algae on the rock. For some reason it comes up bright pink in a levels adjustment in Photoshop.
