It all depends on what you have in your tank, size of tank, accessibility needed to get into the tank. Many factors. Center and 4-8 inches above the water usually work. eric

I have that same rig and I put it right on top of my aquarium (with glass top), and back far enough so that I can open the hinged lids. It hangs off the back a bit but that has never been a detriment as far as I can tell.

Some online stores tell you toiput it directly on top of the glass cover. What I have heard is 8-12 inches from the water is good as this will not heat the water as much.
Where did you buy this fixture & for what cost?
I am shopping for the same fixture , only w/250w MHs (30"deep)
