I added 3 to my tank last weekend (first fish after cycling a new tank). The next day, I noticed 2 of them had bloody wounds on their sides, and the next day one of them was dead. The other two seem to be doing fine.

What's weird is that I never really saw them fighting or anything during the day, but apparently there was a battle going on overnight.

They are one of my favorit fish except you never know if you are going to get Jekel or Hyde. I always added at least three and up to 12 in my tanks. After time there was always 1 that knocked off most of the others. I recently had two in my tank (like up until this Saturday), I gave them to someone because they would not leave anything else alone in the tank. Both were knuckleheads.

You are suppose to keep them in even numbers not odd. If you go with odd one will be killed. This is .02

Minimum of five, otherwise you will have 4,3,2,then one. Some here seem to be lucky with less, but that is an exception to the rule.Seven or eight is a nice little school.

The even/odd thing is not true. They can't count. They are damsels and can and will kill each other. They just don't all get along all the time.

So are they a peaceful addition to a reef tank? I would not want to add them to my tank just to watch them scrapping with each other all the time. I want tranquility on the reef....

Chromis seem to do best in groups over 5. Acropora is dead on right. Everyone I've talked to with less than 5 has issues. I had 3, two killed one, then one killed the other, then I bought two more, now I have one. Again. *sigh*

They are an excellent addition, they are quite peaceful, just in larger groups, IME.

I like them also. They may not be the most extravagant fish, but in a nice size group they are a noteworthy addition. Anthony

I added 7 to my tank expecting a few to die off. None of them have, and now I'm stuck with a school of seven chromis.

I have 20 in my reef and planning on going up to 30. When they school they are really nice looking. They are reasonable in price and make it look like the real world.

I think my BTA has been the culprit in the decrease in numbers. I'm not positive though...
