OT: Interresting read on Taxes

I got one of those e-mails that lists all the taxes that supposodly did not exist 100 years ago (prior to the 16th ammendment). So I did a little research and found an interresting histroy lesson on the US Treasury website:

That was a rather good read. So with this current evolution are we thinking taxation of goods at the consumer spending level would be the easiest and most direct?
