I'm no glass drilling pro by any means, but I think drilling a tank with water in it already is pretty much guaranteed to get you 90 gallons of water on your floor. Glass is best drilled laying flat, and you have to have water around the cutting bit to keep the friction from creating too much heat and to disperse the tiny glass particles being created as you drill. I think the water in the tank will be putting pressure on the pane of glass you're drilling, and I think you're likely to have the whole glass pane shatter and flood the area the tank is in. Hopefully others can give a more definitive and technical reason to not go ahead with this, but I think it's a good way to get 90gal of water on your floor, which is never a good thing!

Why did you post this question all over reefcentral?
It can be done, it runs its risks, but I can personally tell you that it can be done, I did it with a 180 gallon reef tank, easy as pie. Just keep the bit cooled/wet. And if you break the tank... it was a risk you were willing to take.

I've drilled a few tanks but always empty on the side. Your biggest issues I would think will be getting glass dust into the tank (probably not good for gills), keeping the bit cool (can't pool water using the plumbers putty), and keeping your drill at the right angle.
I suppose you could use a spray bottle and helper to keep the bit cool. Other than that I don't have many ideas for you. MAybe in this thread? http://archive.reefcentral.com/forum...hreadid=603816 |
