Tank stand

I see alot of DIY plans for stands and the majority seem to use 2x4's doubled up...has anyone here built your own stand and if so any reason you wouldn't use a 4x4 stand instead?

Properly assembeled the 2x4's do very well. The main reason people double them up on the legs is to keep the weight off of the screws.

you can use single 2x4s but would need to fasten the horizontal supports on top of it so there is not any sheer force on the fasteners.

what are you looking to accomplish?

Planning an upgrade to a 220 and would like to make my own stand/canopy combo, and feel 4x4's would be stronger since I want a very open front for sump maintenance. Have seen stands with double doors that when open give total access to sump.

4x4's and 2x4's are for house's that is over kill. i used 1x6 for my stand on my 110. it is plenty strong.

4x4s will eventually not be stronger since they will twist with time. As they dry they warp. Most stands aren't really doubled up 2x4s that I've seen. A lot just use the 2nd 2x4 as something to screw into through the legs and top frame to hold it all together. Essentially the 2nd 2x4 could be cut into 2 pieces to show it doesn't do anything. I recently framed (had the finishing done by a friend) a stand for a 40/65g out of all 1x4s, 2 in each corner in an L shape. I need to get some pics of it up, but anyway 2x4s in the corners as legs and 2 2x8's for horizontal support will be all you need.

If you want full access below it the above link is proabable going to be your best bet. One more question, it is going to be glass or acrylic?

Iam looking at an AGA hoping to buy a 180 from a local here that might be getting out of the hobby, if not i will go with a 220. My current tank is a 135 72"x24"x18 wide not happy with the width as it limits your aqua scaping and would like to have a few more fish
