Do mandrin fish eat Amphipods
I am considering adding a Mandarin to my reef. I have always loved this fish but was afraid to add one because of their finicky eating habits. Now that the tank has been established for over 6 years, I think I may be able to support this fish. My tank is a 90 gal reef with over 150 lb. of live rock and a one-inch layer of sand. The other fish in the tank are a purple Tang and Flame angel (both as old as the tank) and a pair of Sebae Anemone fish.
As far as my pod population goes, during the day I don't see many pods or anything but after the lights go out there are literally hundreds and hundreds of pods (mostly Amphipods) everywhere. On the glass, the rock, and even on the sand. I would assume that the Mandarin would be able to find these guys during the day or learn to feed a night when they are all over the place. Am I way off base here? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Art |

manderins on;y hunt during the day. they sleep at night. i had one and there would be 1000's of pods at night but none during the day while she was hunting so i had to give her away, i had a 75 with 100 lbs of lr. if you read up on them they require 75 gallon w/100 lbs of lr so you should be fine and you dont have any fish to compete with it.

Amphipods are too large for most Mandrin Dragonetts.
Or even the Spotted, or should i say Psychedelic Fish. Copepods are a more appropriate size. |

Beleive it or not, they are out in the day as well, on your rocks and in your Seagrasses (if you have any).
Your mandrin will be able to find them with no problem. I don't think you will have any problems, Just keep up your water stability. And remember not to add to many fish ! =P |

your manderian will stay in the dark areas of your rock work during the day (same as your ampphipods). and sleep at night.
With your tank size and amount of LR you will not have any trouble with one. But keep in mind with the manderian you will rarely see it. The Psychedelic (spotted) on the other hand will spend equal time in the light v/s the dark. I have a manderian for several years now but in the begining I wished I'd went with the psychedelic so I could enjoy watching him. Lucky

My mandy will eat frozen brine shrimp. Stick with the bigger ones. I have found they are less finicky.

They can and will. That little mouth can open fairly large. Watch him yawn.

Thanks guys. I think I will go with a Psychedelic one as I like them equally. I will also stay away from the very small ones. My pod population is not limited to the amphipods. They are just the ones I see the most of. Maybe because they go out on to the sand and glass where as the other pods stay in or on the rock.

My manderins eat both, and you can tell when they get an amphipod as it stirs a bit, kinda cool.
They seem to hunt best when halides kick off and just actinics, but they do hunt all day as well in dark areas. I went w/ small mandy's myself, less intake of pods needed. You should be fine.
