closed loop vs. powerheads
I am getting together all my equipment for a 44g that i'm building out of scrap glass. Tank dimensions will be 35 long by 18 wide and 16 deep. I plan on an sps dominated tank. My question is what to do with flow. I have some mj 1200's that i could do the modd to and use on my ac jr for my wave timer. Or I could go the closed loop route. If i did the closed loop could someone recomend a good pump to use and if i should go powerheads how many to use? Thanks for any input

IMO, iwould go with a closed loop. I personally don't like to have too many powerheads IN the tank. A closed loop is a cleaner install, IMO. A good brand is a Sequence Snapper. It can be valved back for less flow AND watt useage. Best of both worlds, but then that's MY opinion, i'm sure you'll get many others.
Heres the link to the snapper: http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_ViewIt...ct~MM1124.html I hope this helps!

will i need that big of a pump?

It is a matter of choice. That is a 100 watt pump for only 2400 gph. Two Koralia 4's put out the same flow for a fourth of the wattage and less heat and noise.

Probably not. I just picked this one because you can valve it back to whatever flow you need. Plus, IME, whenever i purchase a pump, i try to get one bigger then i need because i tend to upgrade to larger tanks eventually and this cuts down on my future expenses. Here's another good pump, a little more of what you need:

I run a Reeflo Snapper as my main return pump and its a quiet as can be.

i agree with sequence for flow control and noise issues. The gen x are great pumps but too lound if in a main room

You may also want to consider going with vortech or tunze. Great controllabel flow with the ability to upgrade to a bigger tank and not having to start over again building a cl system. Cost for both is a basically a horse apiece but tunze or vortechs cost a lot less to operate. Just some food for thought.

don't want to hijack, but how do you decide between the vortech or tunze, some are controllable others not. Which do you buy?

I would defiently use powerheads!

I recommend the CL, I like it because it is cleaner. I also hated cleaning powerheads every other month also.
If you do go with powerheads, make sure they have magnetic mounts cause they are soooo much more convienent.

I would go with powerheads with a wavemaker, try Tunze.

tunze better than vortech then? some of the tunze are not controllable are they ok?

I run a GEN-X40 for a return pump and 2 Tunze 6101's with controller in a 135gal. hard to beat the Tunzes!!

Valerie, most of the larger tunze pumps are controllable via a single or multi controller. Vortechs are also controllabe, but cost a little more upfront, they generate less heat, and are less obtrusive in your tank. I couldn't afford the vortechs so I went with a slightly used 6100 with single controller which I got at a very good price. CL are great for laminar flow but in no way compare to the wave action tunze and vortechs create.

I have a closed loop on my 40 breeder. The returns are split by an OM Squirt 2 way. Each side of the return has 2 outputs (4 total). I LOVE the flow it creates. I'm running a Pan-World 1100 gph pump for the CL and have an Eheim 1262 for a return from my sump. The flow from the return is also split by a SCWD.
LOTS of random flow and no powerheads. |
