Dying macro.

Why is my macro dying it's going from a green to a white color. Could it be b/c of very little current or the light can be to close (8") or my po4 reactor is in the same sump.

it could be going sexual. What type of macro algae is it? I have a feeling that you should remove it before it releases it's spores into the water column. Did this happen quickly or did it slowly turn white/pale.

It's a cheato algae and it did turn rather quickly after I added it to my sump. I bought about 5gl. worth with tons of life.

hmmm chaeto doesn't typically go sexual...........can you give us your water parameters? It could be that there is something wrong. It also could be that you just don't have enough nutrients in the water to sustain it.

quick, overstock your tank and do massive over feedings.. thats the way to keep algae.. (and ppl wonder when they have 2" of fish for every gal. of water in their tank why the have algae)

edit: btw, oct2274, the proper term for our position is "computer loser" :P

Do you know anything about vin's tank?

Do you know how large it is, what he's using for lighting/filtration/circulation, how many fish he has, and what size?

I think you may have jumped to conclusions....without answers to the intelligent questions that oct asked, your "answer" is meaningless.

you are right it is meaningless, as it was a sarcastic joke about other ppl's tanks.. i was just making a suggestion on how to make algae grow. if you check my other thread you'll see im an expert on algae growth

edit: btw, its cheato.. doesn't need too much light to survive, filtration/circulation doesn't matter (unless he has power heads pointed directly at it) fish count does matter, thats why i suggested the overstock... usually helps all forms of algae grow.

Sorry I haven't been around but these are my parameters:

phosphate 0
alkalinity 9
magnesium 1350
calcium 400
ph 8.0
nitrate 0

I'm trying to get my ca. and ph. up I know its low. Some other things I didn't mention are its a 120rr. 2x250 14k MH 2-46.5 super actinics VHO and I use Melev. idea for fuge lighting.

hehe.. if phosphate and nitrate are at 0 why bother with the cheato? if you have rampant hair algae that is eatting up all the nutrients then i understand..

one thing you could try is turn off the lights in your main display for a couple days and only leave it on in the sump (if thats where your cheato is) and many ppl alternate their display lights on for the day, sump at night.. keeps paramaters under control.

or you could move the hair algae down to a low light area (like sump w/o lights on) and move your cheato up to main display... if its possible to move those rocks.. again i have to assume because i don't really know whats going on..

how about livestock? have a bunch of fish in there i assume?

and calcium at 400 is fine.. need 350+ for sps if im not mistaken.. its been awhile since i looked.. and your ph is only slightly low.. neither would have an affect on the cheato
