I did the mesh material mod on my ASM skimmer needle wheel, all I can say is WOW! What a differance in the bubbles this cheap mod makes.

WOW!

Very Cool!!!! Where did you get the mesh? It looks the same as the old mesh and floss with spray bars we used to use in the sumps before bio-balls. I wonder if you could mod other skimmer pumps with this method? I might experiment with a rio on a CPR as well as my ASM's.

you can request samples from the enkamat makers.
http://www.colbond-usa.com/getpage.html?pgid=8&pgtype=5

but you can also use the indistrual strength scraper pads found in the home cleaning isle at homedepot. you just have to cut the pads down. they come 3 pads to a pack.

i also tried the gutter guard but could not tell any differance from the stock needle wheel.

Thanks for the info. It turns out that the Enkamat is the same material used in the DLS filters which I still happen to have some of. Enkamat The data sheet also says they are the same thickness of the P4 & P5 at Aquatic-Eco. Looks like I am going to give it a shot.

spleify, what model pump did you mod?

Erick,

I found even better on ebay for $7.50 shipped. I am assuming the kit on ebay wont have the tie raps. Big deal, I have a lot of them home. Have you moded yours? I want to try it on H&S Eheim pump even though I heard this mods are great for American Skimmers since they needle wheel pumps don't compare with the German ones. I am not sure if I should go ahead and mod it. What do you think?

i modded a Maxijet(1000 Needle wheel) and i modded the needle wheel from a deltec pump(aquabeen 2000) works great man!!! eheim not sure if it is the needle wheel or not but if it is its easier to mod. If anything can you replace the pump with one of the Gen X?? from the threads i have read on them they have great results when modded with the Enkamat!!! I am currently waiting on my new deltec skimmer and as soon as i get it its going to get meshed up!!! Good luck mang, if you some help just let me know....

oh if it is just impeller... you might want to make a wheel out of acrylic and cut the blades down on the impeller(just enought o lay an acrylic disk on it so it lays flush!) then put your enkamat on the acrylic disk and viola!!! there are a couple of threads out here with tons of pics and on a couple of other sites as well... if you cant find em let me know i will help ya.

I heard those GenX pumps have problems getting rusted. Eheim has already needle wheel. Plus Eheim are German pumps, you can never go wrong with them. I just dont want to mod it and it does not work well because a replacement regular impeller is $75 and needle wheel one is $140. Here is a photo of the Eheim's Impeller

i would choose eheim over any other pump any day dont cut the pins off yet, just put the mesh over the pins and see the difference, once you see the diff if you like the results go ahead and mod the impeller.... you will be satisfied man, the two skimmers i did yield great results!!! your H&S is a recirc skimmer right? if so it will be even better!

yeah, once you go recirculating you won't go back! I will try to put the mesh on top of the pins first, it's a very good idea. Thanks Erick

I am thinking about modding the mj1200 on my coralife SS65.

Anyone done it with one before?
