Vortech in a 65g?
I have a mixed (zoos, ricordea, singularia, caps, digitatas) 65g (36x18x24) that currently has two Tunze 6025's. It has the regular reef floor aragonite on the bottom, not too fine. The flow is decent, but on a tank that is only 3' long I can't seem to get a balance between good flow in the middle and bottom of the tank, and good surface movement. I was considering getting a Tunze 6055 to add to this to get some random movement in the tank, and then I could use one of the 6025's to disturb the surface. The other consideration is getting either a Tunze Stream 6101 or a Vortech. The Vortech seems like it would be good with the wireless driver to push a nice wall of water around the tank. So would a Vortech just be way too powerful for this tank? Or could I run it at a lower setting and get away with it?

You can always turn the speed/flow down if it is too much.

I used a vortech on my 60 cube and it was awesome. I used an on off cycle of 8 minutes and ran it at about 40% of it's max speed. It never got hot. This was before the wave timer was available.
What I really liked was minimal profile in the tank (small and no wires or hanging brackets), and the suction agains the glass creates "undertow" currents in all directions. I think it is a great choice for a tank your size! As a side note, I would caution big tank owners to be careful with these pumps. When they run full throttle 24/7 I hear they get hot enough to burn skin and melt acryic. Not my experience but one I have read. Again, on a smaller tank, they rock! Ryan. |

Are they loud? I've seen a few people saw they are quite loud if you have a tank in your living room.

I have one on my 50gal and you can hear it when it is ramped up. Sounds like a wwhhhrrrrrrr.... Sounds funny I know but thats the best way to explain it. Not loud but def not silent. But if dead silence is what you are going for I would look elsewhere.

The noise is the biggest issue for me. But I would likely never get it to 100% in a mixed tank this size, is the sound issue much better at the lower speeds? I'd likely use them in lagoon mode with the max speed around 60 or 75%.

If you keep it at a lower setting in your 60 you'll probably never even hear it. When I run mine at 100%, yeah, I can hear them. But I usually run them about 50% or so ( varies on reef crest mode ) and I don't hear them over the other things in the tank ( lighting fans, etc. ). Overall, great pumps!

You've got more than a Vortech in there!
I'm pretty much decided on the Vortech, the only question now is if I want to pay full retail or get one used. |

they appear to only cause the acrylic to crack when it's 3/4" (so that the spacer isn't used) and the acrylic is overstressed to begin with (when they should have used thicker acrylic for that size tank- extra bracing helps keep it from bowing but it doesn't take the stress off the panel). nobody else with acrylic has stepped forward with issues, so i have a hard time blaming the pump entirely and not the tank. |

The post above is dead on.
I should not have propogated information that I have only read... regarding the larger tanks. I only used a vortech on a 60 gallon, never bigger. The point I was trying to make is that the Vortechs are ideal in small / medium sized tanks (60 to 100 gallons). Turned down, they are cool, quiet, and create awesome currents with minimal in tank profile and no plumbing. A clear standout over tunzes, maximods, or closed loops in this arena in my opinion. Thus, the conception that you should only get one if you have a giant tank is incorrect, and only on the giant tanks with 3/4 acrylic running 100%, 24/7, are there some concerns out there. To clarify the concerns... many have said that the CAN get hot enough that the are afraid of children touching it. I never saw this on my 60. Not even close. Acryic CRAZING has been seen in one tank where I follow the post closely. You should get a vortech! Regards. Last edited by FishTruck; 12/25/2007 at 06:38 PM. |

I ended up winning a Vortech MP40W on ebay. I think I lucked out since the auction ended Christmas day. According to the auction it's a barely used MP40W, I got it for $255.

So since I got such a killer deal on the pump I was considering purchasing the battery backup as well. Is the battery backup worth the price tag?
