MARS VP Opening

First of all, this is club busness that most the reefing world could care less about so please don't reply to this thread. There is a thread on the MARS member forum. Post there if you have questions or comments.

VP Opening

Bruce Azzarito had to resign as VP. Thanks again Bruce for all of your hard work.

We'll be holding elections for VP in January. Anyone interested in running please show up. The main duties of the VP are to book speakers for the general meetings. This entails...

Selecting the topic
Confirming the Speaker
Announcing the Speaker
Booking the Speaker's Flight
Booking the Speaker's Hotel Room
Arranging Ground Transportation for the Speaker
Hosting the Speaker Before the Meeting
We generally try 9 speaker events a year. On average, it takes about 12 hours a month to do this work.

Chairing the Q&A session at the beginning of the meeting is your choice. If you're uncomfortable with public speaking another officer can easily do it.

Yes. I'm so fired up about Sanjay!!!

The one guy i thought we could not get. The next VP coming in will have some pretty big shoes to fill.

The VP job seems like a lot of work.

I have one question, Is this a club for hobbyist?

Because it seems like more members have wholesale licenses these days, their own buisnesses or side ventures; does this seem like conflict of interests at all? I've never understood this. Can someone elaborate for me on this. Thanks.

Great question Mark. I too would like to see what people think about Marks question.

Just for the record, as owner of Captive Reef Systems and ROWA USA, I did my best not to bring either of these two businesses to the club meetings with me. I always tried to let everyone know that my opinions were always based on my own personal experience and education working with some of the best names in the aquarium business. If at anytime anyone felt I was promoting either of my two businesses, I apologize. It was never, ever, my intention. I ran for a position on the MARS Board to promote education and the sharing of success stories.

My thanks to everyone that supported me as your VP. It was truly an honor.

Yes!

More than what? Out of the 104 current members I am only aware of about 12 that have any sort of ownership stake in a related business. I know a few of our members are employed by LFS, but enthusiasts first.

Bruce, this has nothing to do with you personally. I would also want to thank you for your service.

This is just more out of curiosity than anything else. I have spoken to a few other people that have also brought this up. I am sure it is not a big deal, but I was just curious.

Totally understand. I too have felt the meetings have seemed to be more focused on discounts at our LFS and the raffle.

I am also curious to know how the livestock people have won through the raffle has done. Has everyone had good luck with the animals surviving?

Good point Bruce. I also agree about the feel of the direction. I guess I am in the minority here as I am not even an active person in the meeting scene. For a person that does not do well in small areas, I had to even give my raffle tickets away as I knew that it was going to be too much. The same thing at the frag swap. More is not always better.

Roberts rule of law, "A good meeting starts on time and ends on time"

Maybe I am just "that guy" tonight, but I am a hobbyist that does not have any other ties or interests except for my passion of this hobby and the livestock in my tank and local resources.

I most likely will re-read this and feel that I misrepresented myself and my ideas, but I just want to make sure that there are no conflicts of interests. Oh well...I guess this is just my point of view and if 10% of our club has stake and another 10% does not make these things publicly known, 1 in 5 is not that bad.

How many meeting actually start and end on time? So if that doesn't happen by that statement it is not a good meeting? I can't disagree more with that statement.

I would say you are in the minority. But, Long ago when Paul started getting all these huge raffles there were people coming just for that the raffles. There is even a thread i will try and dig it up.

I said then that i didn't like people coming just for raffles alone. Well pretty much right after that i had several people reply with i don't care why they are coming as long as they are coming kinda attitude.

I will look up the thread so i don't misquote people too bad

I am not talking about raffles. Like I said, I know I am in the minority. I was asking about how many members have wholesale licences in regards to a conflict of interest of this group being for hobbyist.

I don't get why that is a conflict?

like Bruce said he had businesses, I don't hear people pushing there business on the club.
