Sump Under a 90g

I'm in the process of setting up a 90g. I had success with the current sump I use under my 55g tank (10g glass aquarium w/ baffles). Of course, this is hardly large enough for a 55g, so I'll need to make a new one for my 90g.

What size tank should fit in the stand? My current 55g won't fit because the length of the inside of the stand is 46". I have a 29g I could use, but would this be large enough?

I forgot to mention, the area is 46" x 16" and I don't want to purchase a pre-made sump.

i have a 20g long under mine, seems to be enough room even with a fuge, i think the 29g has the same demesions only deeper so id go with that and save a few bucks

Woohoo!!!! That's kind of what I was hoping for. I didn't know if there was a minimum size sump I could have for a 90g.

scrmbld - do you have any issues with your sump overflowing when you turn off your return pump?

I used a 20g tall under mine, becuase it is what I used for my 55g and just moved it over to the 90g when I upgraded from 55g to 90g. It worked great and I had a refuge in the middle of it, so I would think that the 29g would be even better.

mine hasnt overflowed ever, of course you want to pull the plug on your return to see if it will overflow, always test!!!!

i had a 20 long under my old 90 and worked great.

With my 75 I used a 30 gallon sump -- longer and not as tall as a 29. If you design it right (( not having the running water level too high )) you shouldn't have any flooding issues at all.

I should add --- don't count on a check valve to prevent flooding, they will fail. Just make sure you have a siphon break hole in your return line right below the water level.

How do you have the 20 gallon sumps configured? Skimmer section size, baffle spacing, return section size, fuge section size (if any), any other equipment in the sump besides skimmer and return pump? PHosphate/carbon reactors, top off switches, etc. Trying to figure out a layout for a new sump for me, and am looking for ideas.

This is how my 20 gal sump (( for my 58 )) is laid out.

From RIGHT to LEFT.

Inflow/skimmer chamber. Baffles // tiny fuge // return section (( using an external pump. Carbon is on a PVC shelf in the return section. Phosban reactor is hanging off the right side.

Thanks, Toddrtrex. How wide is the input/skimmer section? I've got an ASM G3, and need to make sure it fits. Also looks like you've got the feed pump and the return for the phosphate reactor in the input/skimmer section, right?

Of course, my skimmer section will have to be a bit bigger as I've upgraded to an Octopus NW-150.

I am not too sure how wide it is, can measure tonight. My skimmer is the 1GX.

And you are correct, the pump for the reactor is in that section.

That is pretty much how I have my sumps, should work out perfectly. ( the only difference being I am using external pumps )

Here is the diagram for a 20g High tank, which the whole design revolves around the maximum I could get for a refuge, using a mag7 and a Euroreef ES52 skimmer. The full tank picture is after the tank was running for about 6 months.

I actually ended up using the 29g like the previous posters recommended. I'll post a picture tonight.

That is exactly how I have my sump/fuge. It's a 20L and has been working great for over a year. Here is a pic after it was first set up.

Ok - here is the sump I built two nights ago. It isn't in use yet. I'll include a better walkthrough once I start my build thread.
