killer magnets

i bought the 60 pound magnets from the gaussboys and they are so strong that i pinched my finger and it drew blood. im afraid that these magnets are way too strong and will shatter my tank when i use them.

Beefy almost had a nasty magnet incident once at Oceans Floor...

You should ask him about that...

I think the key is to never let them snap. Even with the SureGrip's, Magnavore or whatever, you press the inside maget to the glass and then place the outside magnet against the glass several inches above or below it then move them together. If you want to be safer, you could always add some material as a spacer on the outside. (Styrofoam, wood or whatever)

Use a shim. That way as you slide the shim out the magnets will gently attach without slapping the glass. Or what ppurcell suggested. Either way will work.

i padded it with thin foam and electrical tape. is electrical tape bad for reef? i was also thinking of using my vaccumm sealer to seal the padded magnets.

I'd put your spacer on the outside of the tank, not the inside.

i don't know if electrical tape is reef safe or not, but i'd prefer to be cautious and not put anything with unknown adhesives on it into the tank. who knows what's in the adhesive that they use on that stuff.

as far as the spacers go, i would think that you could get by without tape altogether. if the magnets are strong enough, you should be able to just align the magnets with the foam in between them and the glass, and the foam should stay put.

this method didn't work. i ended up removing the foam and vacuum sealer bag from the magnet works great. and superglue doesnt like sticking to the sealer bags.

why not take a trip to the hobby lobby and get some resin? It's less than $10 for enough to encase quite a few magnets.
