How much flow through phosphate reactor?
I am making a DIY PR atm and is there a max or min flow for it to get best performance?

It will depend on the media you are using, but I would suggest looking at the recommended flow rate of the other reactors and mimic that. For the TLF Phosban reactor the recommended flow rate is 20-30 gph for 130 grams PhosBan and 30-40 gph for 200 grams.

I use Rowaphos in the Phosban reactor and adjust the flow to get the top layer of the Rowaphos to tumble. What my flow rate is is unknown. I do know it is slow since the 404 minjet pump is dial down most of the way and the ball valve is half way closed.

I thought TLF suggested 60 gph. Get something capable a little more flow than the manufactures recomened rates and then fine tune with valves until it looks like this.

If you mix your granular ferric oxide (GFO) with granular activated carbon (GAC), then you will not have to worry about the GFO tumbling into dust. You can also add a layer of GAC on top of the GFO to prevent tumbling. This is easier than trying to fine tune the flow.
I just use an Eheim 1046 (79 gph) and let it rip. |
