Define rare.
Rare in nature? Very few clowns are actually rare in their natural range. Leucokranos and thiellei are rare in nature because they are likely hybrids. Rare in the trade? Species like nigripes, tricinctus and chrysopterus are not rare in nature, but they are in a PITA for wholesalers and retailers because they ship so poorly, so they aren't available very often. Rare because they have unusual patterns? Picasso, naked and snowflake clowns are clowns with unusual patterns of very common species. Rare because they live in protected or isolated areas so they can't be easily collected and/or transported? Mccullochi, omanensis and fuscocaudatus live in protected waters. Chrystogasters live around a few remote islands. You might get better results if you make a list of the species you would like to see. You might consider a true sebae clown or a bicinctus to be quite rare, while I see them quite often.

Ganked from google:
A. McCullochi. It appears to be from a japanese blog...I don't read japanese, but these two appear to be captive. Perhaps there is yet hope to see these in the trade someday soon...

Slakker, those are some pretty cool clowns, I have never seen anything like them before. Def. something that we will hopefully start to see being brought into the US.

Is he breeding them now? I remember he got a permit to collect 10 pairs but I have not seen anything in forever about them

Maybe soon was to optimistic Scott, although in the world of acquiring mc's soon could mean, oh maybe five yrs . I'm sure there's a few of us crazy clown folk that would pay a decent price for them, so hopefully they'll make their way over within a year or so.
Yes Jov, he is breeding them. He has a nice thread on another forum with fry pics. I believe he collected four spawning pairs when he went out.

No doubt Chris, no doubt. There are a few of us willing to go long on the dollar and be patient.
One thing in our favor, market saturation for a larger clown specimen, which does not look like a classic clown, is going to occur pretty quickly. A good breeder alone can drop the price substantially, i.e. $10K/pr to $1K/pr very quickly with a minimal supply. IMHO, it would be a wise business decision to sell to the higher areas first and invest in more growout capabilities to sustain the broodstock diversity.

I agree Scott, it seemed to happen with the rush of latz that came in this past year. Once the core group got their fill, there seemed to be some latz that lasted weeks if not months at vendors/lfs because the everyday hobbiest wasn't going to pay the going rate for what I've heard described as a "boring brown clownfish".

Just going back and reading some old posts by mrblue, he states that the US wholesalers wouldn't touch what the Japanese would pay, so who knows if/when we will see them. Maybe we should pool are resources and get a wc pair to a competent breeder here in the US.
