I just purchased this unit. But it comes without a water shield. Can you just buy some acrylic from Home Depot and cut it to fit?

I have the 4 bulb TEK. I just went to lowes and had them cut it to size for me. No issues with heat with it. I dont know the size you need though and if they have the width needed in stock.

Is there any effect to the lights with using any type of acrylic versus the one they sell.

It's better to run w/o shields if you can as the fixture will perform much better when the bulbs are cooler.
