Question Camera Advice

I'm basically wanting a good digital "point and shoot" camera, or even something a bit better. I have another camera for the fancier shots and I have Sony 35mm SLR I use for making my own prints, so I just need a new digital to take to outings, social events, et cetera.

One of my main concerns is size. I would like to find something that is on the smaller side, or at least has a fairly slim profile, as I really hate having stuff in my pocket as is.

The only other things that are really required are that it has decent adjustments for indoor/outdoor, and the ability to shoot decent sized and fair/good quality video clips is a definite plus. A good display screen is always nice.

If I could find something under or around $500, that would be nice.

Sorry that it's rather vague.

Thanks.

GOing through this right now and the thing to google is "shutter lag." That's one of the big points of difference...how long the machine delays between push and snap.
Best ones re shutter lag---Casio, but Casio has lousy fuzzy focus. Middle of both factors: Canon Rebel, Fujifilm FInepix---fast enough the puppy won't have left the frame while the shutter is working, and decent focus.
Go to the Photography forum in RC and look at the discussions on point and shoots.

Look at the Canon S5 IS. My wife has the S3 IS and gets decent pictures with it.

check out the site DP review. It is loaded with reviews and comparisons of tons of cameras. It's a great resource.

Since you stated you wanted something for a "pocket cam" you should look to the Canon Digital Elph line, Nikon Coolpix, or similar. Here are some that might fit the bill:

Canon Powershot SD1000 Digital Elph $189

Canon Powershot SD850 IS Digital Elph $269

Fujifilm FinePix E900 $233

I have an older Fuji Finepix, and also use some newer ones at work. Great cameras, but they have 1 drawback that I really don't like. In order to connect the camera to you computer, you have to have Fuji's software installed on the computer, otherwise it can't read the card.

It isn't slim by any means in my book, but the Fuji FinePix S5100 is an excellent point-and-shoot camera. I really like mine for that. Now, when I first got this camera, I was basically looking for an SLR and got the wrong thing. I can't stand my camera for any "cool" aquarium shots. But when it comes to taking regular range and typical pictures of the family, it is pretty hard to beat.
